Our Story

Restoration House WNC was founded in 2016 in response to a growing need for coordinated social services in Swain County and surrounding rural communities. The organization began within the caring ministry of Bryson City United Methodist Church, led by Pastor Wayne Dickert and Catherine Gantt, who recognized that many individuals facing hardship lacked a central place to find support, resources, and connection.

What started as a small outreach effort quickly grew into a community-driven initiative focused on meeting immediate needs while helping individuals build long-term stability. From this vision, the Resource Day Center was created as a welcoming hub where individuals could access food, hygiene services, case management, and navigation support in a safe and respectful environment.

As community needs expanded, so did Restoration House WNC’s services. Over the years, the organization has grown into a multi-program nonprofit addressing food insecurity, housing instability, transportation barriers, recovery support, and other social determinants of health throughout rural Western North Carolina. Restoration House WNC now operates programs including community food distribution, warm meals, recovery and peer support services, housing navigation, home safety and accessibility projects, transportation assistance, and community resource coordination.

Through partnerships with local churches, healthcare providers, nonprofits, volunteers, and regional organizations, Restoration House WNC has worked to bridge service gaps in communities where resources are often limited and transportation challenges can create additional barriers to care. The organization has also played an active role in supporting individuals and families during times of crisis, including economic hardship, natural disasters, and periods of housing instability.

At the heart of Restoration House WNC’s work is the belief that every person deserves dignity, compassion, and access to support without judgment. While the organization has grown significantly since its founding, its mission remains rooted in relationship-centered care, community collaboration, and creating pathways toward stability, wellness, and hope for individuals and families across the region.

In 2019, a generous donation of a building marked a significant milestone in our journey, enabling us to establish a dedicated cold weather shelter. This expansion enhanced our capabilities and strengthened our commitment to serving as a pillar of support, providing shelter, nourishment, and pathways to stability for those in need. At Restoration House WNC, we are more than just a service provider; we are a community-driven mission focused on uplifting and empowering the lives of our neighbors.
